Business and Finance Academy

The Academy of Business & Finance is designed to give high school students an opportunity to prepare for collegiate studies and careers in the fields of business and finance. Emphasis is placed on a college preparatory curriculum that is directly linked to the financial world.

Academy students participate in mentorships, career shadowing and internship programs that link the resources of business, economics, and finance to education and to the students.

The Academy of Business & Finance is a program that is accredited by the National Academy Foundation.

Academy Internship

A compensated internship is recommended for completion of the Academy of Business and Finance. The internship should be completed during the summer between the student's 11th and 12th grade year or during the 12th grade year. 

Students must have completed a minimum of 3 semester-long academy courses by the end of their junior year and be enrolled in academy courses their senior year in order to apply for an internship.

FBLA Student Organization

Academy students are encouraged to join Future Business Leaders of America. This organization gives students opportunities to attend conferences and workshops, travel, and participate in state and national competitions. FBLA students also develop leadership skills and do community service.

Hewitt Trussville High School Academy classes are offered under the supervision and governance of the Alabama State Department of Education Career and Technical Education Division. All students shall participate in, enjoy the benefits of and be free of discrimination in all Academy classes and activities regardless of gender, race, religion, belief, national origin, age, disability or ethnic group.


Samford Freshman Finance Day

Several students from the Hewitt-Trussville High School Academy of Business and Finance attended the Samford Freshmen Finance Day on Thursday, November 13, 2014. The Brock School of Business hosted the 3rd annual event on the campus of Samford University. Activities for the day included presentations and discussions by faculty including Dean Howard Finch, Dr. Franz Lohrke (Entrepreneurship), Dr. Darin White (Sports Marketing), Dr. Rusty Yerkes (Finance), and Dr. Barbara Cartledge. Following the presentations, students were given a guided tour of the campus. Complimentary lunch was provided for the Academy of Finance students in the Samford University's Cafeteria.

Students from the HTHS Entrepreneurship and Accounting classes in the Academy of Business and Finance were invited to attend the Alabama Launch Pad Finale held at Workplay in Downtown Birmingham. The final 6 teams from the state of Alabama competed for cash prizes.



HTHS Academy of Finance students, as members of the NAF (National Academy Foundation), are now part of the NafTrack Certified Hiring Program. NAF and 10 of America's top companies announced NAF's Certified Hiring, which promises to give special consideration to job applicants who, as high school graduates, earned a NAF credential. This differentiates students in the hiring process and it also holds value to both the applicant and the employer. The Corporate Partners are:
